ENotice After Brimbank – Brumby has even more explaining to do at Kew Cottages.
Wednesday 27th May 2009
Boroondara Councillor, Phillip Healey, has described as ‘disgraceful’ the State Government’s recent demolition of Kew Cottages Community facilities for the disabled, including special accommodation and a hydrotherapy pool.
Cr. Healey explains how the Council had previously written to the Victorian Premier, John Brumby, asking the Premier to investigate using the Kew Cottages facilities to assist with bushfire relief.
The Government’s response was as surprising as it was swift.
They immediately bulldozed both the DHS 60 bed special accommodation facility, and the DHS Hydrotherapy Pool, located on The Crescent at Kew.
Kew Cottages Coalition President, Brian Walsh, said that Cr. Healey was right to be outraged.
“This demolition appears highly irregular. The Victorian Government’s motives are highly suspicious,” Mr. Walsh said.
“It makes no sense for a State Government to suddenly demolish community infrastructure that is in such high demand in Boroondara and throughout Victoria.
“It makes no sense for a Premier to willfully ignore a local Council’s request and suggestions for helping bushfire victims.
“It makes no sense to demolish DHS facilities that you are contractually obliged to retain.
“It makes no sense – unless, like at Brimbank, the Government has something to hide,” Mr. Walsh said.
