The annual donation data deluge

The annual data on who donated how much to whom was revealed this week by the Australian Electoral Commission.

As always the news is rather late. Current laws mean that we are now only finding out about donations made in the financial year that ended on June 30th last year.

Because of the global financial crisis and the fact there was no federal election, the amount declared in donations to both major parties was down about 60% on the previous financial year, 2007/08.

Still overall Labor received the tidy sum of $42.9 million and the Coalition $38.4million.

But much about political fund-raising that remains hidden from view becuase promised reforms to disclosure laws appear little closer than they were when the Rudd government was elected.
