Baillieu funding push

Baillieu funding push

The introduction of a universal, no-fault safety net to provide lifetime support to the disabled will move closer today when the Baillieu government announces a taskforce to advise on a new funding approach.

The move anticipates the endorsement of a National Disability Insurance Scheme – and possibly a Medicare-type levy to fund it – in a report to be released by the Productivity Commission on Monday.

Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott have declared support for a new deal for the disabled, but a tougher budgetary climate is likely to test resolve.

Mr Baillieu yesterday said there were added pressures on budgets from natural disasters, but said there were also greater pressures on those with disabilities and their carers.
