Crews were called to the Amcor Waster Paper plant about 6.15pm after fire broke out at the large plant.
An MFB spokesman said the fire was initially extremely difficult to reach because it was behind thousands of tonnes of waste paper.
“The plant was full of smoke and making it impossible to see the fire let alone fight it,” he said.
The MFB High Angle Rescue Team was deployed to remove roofing iron to let the smoke escape and allow the fire fighting effort to continue.
The fire was eventually brought under control about 11.45pm.
Front end loaders and fork lifts were used to pull the bales of paper apart to allow firefighters to fully extinguish the blaze.
The surrounding area was monitored for toxic smoke emissions but none were found.
